On Wednesday, January 20, 2010 the IDC hosted Msgr. John A. Radano, we disscussed "Some New Directions in Relationships Among Religons." It was a wonderful gathering where attendents benefited not only from what they listened but also from Msgr. Radano's experience. New Directions in relationships have been set in motion which can help create better relations smong religon wich was the case in the past year. It is a privileged time. Msgr. John A. Radano for some 23 yearsworked at the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, which is an office of the Vatican whose purpose is to promote, through dialog, a unity among Christians who have been divided. Unity is a characteristic of the church, since the church is the Body of Christ, he does not inted his followers to be divided.
"I see a lot of healing taking place today among Christians, "Msgr. Radano declared. "But the healing can go even further. Seeds are being planted today for closer relations between religons to benefit all mankind. We must strive for mutual understanding and social justice. We need to go beyond tolerance." This "privileged time" traces its roots to the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), according to Msgr. Radano. Much healing has occured during the last 45 years to promote greater Christian unity, which in turn creates an environment that could promote further progress. Msgr. Radano also noted hw the Catholic Church has cultivated better relations with Jews and Muslims--once again, efforts launched by the Second Vatican Council.
Msgr. John A. Radano
A priest of the Archdiocese of Newark, Monsignor John A. Radano served from 1984-2008 as a staff member of the Pontifical Council For Promoting Christian Unity, Vatican City, and head of its Western section. Msgr. Radano's distinguished service there ended last May and returned to Seton Hall University, South Orange, where he was a member of the Religious Studies department from 1965 to 1984, following his ordination for the Archdiocese of Newark in 1965. He entered the seminary after graduating from Saint Peter's College, Jersey City, in 1959.
At the Pontifical Council he took part in the Catholic Church's international bilateral dialogues with Lutherans, Reformed, Baptists, Mennonites, Pentecostals, Evangelicals, as well as informal consultations with Seventh Day Adventists and the Salvation Army. He was also the Pontifical Council's liaison with the Commission on Faith and Order of the World Council of Churches (WCC), and a member of the Joint Working Group between the Catholic Church and the WCC.
His articles appear in the New Catholic Encyclopedia (Special Jubilee Edition, the Wojtyla years), in various ecumenical journals including Mid-Stream, Ecumenical Trends, the Journal of Ecumenical Studies, Catholica, in various World Council of Churches publications including the Dictionary of the Ecumenical Movement, as well as in L'Osservatore Romano.
His book, Lutheran and Catholic Reconciliation on Justification, has been published by Eerdmans in 2009. He is currently an adjunct professor at Seton Hall University.
